Le crabe est revenu

"Illness is the night-side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick.
Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place." Susan Sontag
Je suis à l'hopital Tel Hashomer, Meirav center.

Voici mes premiers Haikus (Janvier 2017).

A year ago I was half way in the Chemo..

And today I'm in Providence, Rhode Island for a Summer Institute on Digital Literacy.
I kind of forgot about this blog but looking at the Stats I realized that some people, about 100 hundred, every month are reading it.
Quite amazing given that I make absolutely no efforts to disseminate it  in any way..

So I'm in the States for work and Study and this is unbelievable given where I was exactly a year ago .. But I'm not done with cancer side effects.  First of all, I realize only now how scary and tough was the all process. I cried a lot during the last months suddenly being able to process the fears and the pain. I had panick attacks and experienced severe and embarrassing claustrophobia events.

During treatment I felt strong enough to handle everything alone. But about a month ago I realized this was insane.. I started a therapy with an EMDR psychologist expert in post trauma and especially cancer survivors. I strongly recommend this.

This is a quote from a NY times blog by Francine Shapiro that invented the EMDR therapy:

Cancer Diagnosis and E.M.D.R.
Question:
I am 50 years old and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer five years ago. My doctor has given me a clean bill of health, but I can’t shake my fear that it will return. I thought that with time I’d feel better, but I don’t. Everyone tells me it is important to “be positive.” Could E.M.D.R. help me to get on with my life?
Answer:
Dr. Shapiro responds:
You are not alone in experiencing fear. In a study of 244 breast cancer survivors five to nine years post-diagnosis, published in the journal Oncology Nursing Forum, researchers found that fears of recurrence were frequent. The most commonly reported experiences that triggered fear included yearly follow-up appointments, doctors’ appointments, hearing of another’s cancer, physical symptoms or pain, news reports about breast cancer, and the anniversary of the diagnosis. The time that had elapsed since diagnosis was unrelated to the frequency of such triggers. Sadly, some people mistakenly believe that this overwhelming fear is the inevitable and “natural” outcome of cancer.
Receiving a life-threatening diagnosis can be classified as a trauma. Many people with a cancer diagnosis have entered E.M.D.R. therapy because of anxiety and fear that persists even after the medical treatment has been successfully completed. These long-lasting negative reactions can often be tracked back to the moment of diagnosis or something that happened during treatment that was particularly distressing.
The information processing system of the brain has stored the experience — with the emotions, physical sensations and beliefs that occurred at the time of the event. So, even though medical tests may now show no sign of the disease, the fear and anxiety encoded in that unprocessed memory remains. These feelings can increase dramatically around the time of yearly testing or by any event that reminds the person of the cancer experience. E.M.D.R. therapy is successfully used to process and alleviate these disturbing responses. The therapy allows people to get on with their lives without being haunted by fear.
Also relevant to many breast cancer survivors are unpleasant or painful physical sensations at the site of the surgery. Many times, these sensations can be caused by unprocessed memories. As I noted previously in “E.M.D.R. and Pain,” above, research has been published on the successful E.M.D.R. treatment of phantom limb pain, and the principles guiding the therapy applications are the same in the cases of “phantom breast sensations” which persist after a mastectomy in up to 55 percent of cases (Dworkin, 2006). Although E.M.D.R. therapy cannot eliminate pain caused by actual nerve damage, it is successful in treating the uncomfortable sensations and chronic pain caused by stored unprocessed memories.
The important thing to remember is that no matter how long it has been since diagnosis and treatment, fears of recurrence need not be a permanent psychological scar of breast cancer.

I am cancer FREE

Je suis guérie!!

Cher amis et amies,
Apres un long silence, quelques nouvelles.

MERCI !!!!

Alleluya! LAST CHEMO TREATMENT today!!

Dear friends,

Today I received the eighth and final chemo treatment.

It is not finished yet: I need a surgery to be performed in October and then I will get dayly radiotherapy for two more..

But the worst is behind me! Thank you to all those who helped and supported during these tough months!

What a relief! In retrospect these four months have been really challenging!

And now the good news: the doctors have declared me "Complete responder". This means that my tumor is not detectable on clinical examination. Alleluya!!

Alléluya!! DERNIER TRAITEMENT Chimio aujourd'hui!!!!

Chers amis,

On our vacation in France and also about the pain..

I have not written for a long time. There are good and bad reasons for this.
First, the good ones: the first Taxol treatment – 5th chemo -  went well, no side effects.  Although it lasts longer - four hours compared to two hours and a half - it's easier because there is no concern like with Adriamitzine, the previous drug that could cause tissue damage.

I had not updated the blog mainly because everything was going well and I was excited at the idea of flying to France for a vacation. The holidays were great. We spent the first weekend in Hyeres with my sister and brother. Michel took us to the boat. It was great!

Then we traveled to the Luberon area. We rented a place near Cavaillon with  six families of good friends and their children. I felt in perfect health. I loved the quiet routine of the holidays. I was very happy to reunite with my friends. I enjoyed the idle rest by the pool - in the shade of course. I played tennis and I even did a little biking. We made beautiful walks in the surrounding villages, we ate well and laughed a lot.

What about the last three weeks since my return from vacation? Side effects after the second Taxol treatment (No. 6) were more serious. I had joint pain. I felt terribly tired and was nauseus again. It also affected me psychologically. I felt really pessimistic. Denis was incredibly patient and caring. My sister was here and she was very helpful: she cooked, encouraged me and treated me with massages. Fortunately, the pains lasted four days and then eased gradually.
For the sixth chemo I was with Lia and Sigal because Denis was still in France. Lia filmed two people thanks to which I smile a lot in the hospital medical:  Simon the medical clown and Susannah, the charming and skilled nurse that always find my vein and never hurts. This is just a really short clip.
A big thank you to Sigal who picked us from home, spent long hours at Tel Hashomer and then brought  us backhome.

Two days ago I received the seventh and penultimate treatment. I'm tired and I feel tingling in the fingers, but it is tolerable: nothing to do with the pain of the last time. I'm happy and I try not to think about what will reserve tomorrow ..
Yesterday my yoga teacher worked on the region of the heart. I felt the anguish of pain that gripped my heart .. Breathing and yoga postures were able to relax and release tension. I've written extensively on the benefits of yoga that helps me tremendously in both the physical and the mental level.

When I write these lines, I feel the pain that starts, like the last time, in the shoulders. I am determined to breathe and not to sink into pessimism.

This week we had the pleasure to taste the wonderful dishes that Rochelle, Ilana and Noga prepared for us!

Je me sentais vraiment pessimiste.
